Does anyone know if there were any more than this???

Actually these feathers aren't so bad but the tar is a bit smelly and sticky.

Del. said...

Tags, what about this Copley Close then? Someone put an earlier comment on that they'd moved there in 1947, but I still can't remember it being there when I was still on the estate.Del

tags said...

I don't think it was there in 1947 either. My guess is it was built in late 50's or early 60's.
Did the path to Castlebar have a street name or was that part of Templeman Road?
And did the prefabs near Ruislip Road East have a different street name?
If we include Copley Close we could include Gurnell Grove too...
the more the merrier.

yvonneh said...

Hi Tags, cheating again I see, Gurnell grove was there when I was young But Copley close wasnt built till the 70s It was tagged on to the end of the estate Where castlebar allotments used to be. It is a hideous place, whoever designed it should be made to live in it. I went canvassing round there for an election and it was all dark corridoors with hidden corners, I would be frightened to go out in the day never mind the night. the outside looks like a prison block. They do have a community centre, my mum used to go to the bingo afternoons there. There is also a pub, The Old Bill not bad, saw Ronnie Clements in there when I went. As it was built as part of the estate and not everyone is as old as us,Tags, it should be on your list, and as my list is the same as yours except I have Copley close on mine and Gurnell grove, so I win unless there are more, can I please watch you being tarred and feathered, pleeeeeese if not can we have a photo on site.

Woke up this morning,at the crack of eleven fifteen, leapt to my foot and went in search of an Easter Egg. Nothing, not even one of Tags exploding, hard boiled eggs. The lovely Charlotte had even scoffed the last remaining hot cross bun. She's in for a good listening to when she returns from walking Oscar. Come to think of it, she probably shared the bun with that critter. Del

bob stevens said...

Gurnel Grove wasn't part of the Cuckoo Estate or was it?
When I visited the estate last re-union day Copley Close looked to me like a modern day development in Beirute, the window curtains in the flats could have done with a wash as could some of the people I saw.as for the pub, well not a splash on the old White Hart.

Del. said...

Bob, I spoke to Eddie Dow on the 'phone yesterday and he said that he had spoken to you, albeit briefly, due to some business with a butchers van. Hopefully you'll get to see him again when he isn't negotiating the cost of some sausage rolls, or whatever. Cheers, Del.

Val B said...

I have never considered Gurnel Grove to be part of the Cuckoo Estate, neither Copley Close, but thats not to say that their residents can't be included as Cuckooites.
Tags, whereabouts is Alcott Close? I have never heard of it. Or is it the new road next to the rebuilt Brentside seniors?

bob stevens said...

Hi. Del, yes I did speak briefly to Eddie, he was in fact negotiating with the fish man, we still have milk delivered, butchers van, grocery van and the fish man in the village twice a week, were only 6 mile from Banbury but these people still earn a living from the old fashion way. Oh nearly forgot the paper delivery.
Look forward to seeing you in Perivale in a few months time.
Kind regards

VAL,
Go to google earth UK, type Alcott Close, Hanwell, Ealing, London W.7 England.
Select the Street Level View.
Click on the East and West arrows and do a 360 degree street level view of Alcott Close you will be surprised.

Del. said...

Tags, isn't that where the Council Office used to be? Del

Ron Ratchford said...

If I remember correctly I believe Gurnell Grove was postmarked W.13, therefore I vote it's close , but not close enough

tags said...

Del, from what I can tell from the 360 degree view of Alcott close on google maps UK, is that some newer homes have been built in the council yard just behind the rent office, check it out.

John Eggins. said...

As far As I can remember Alcott Close was a continuation of Cuckoo Ave going through gates leading up to Old Cuckoo Schools.

John ( Eggo ) Eggins.

tags said...

You are probably right John.
I wonder how many people knew that?

Val B said...

Hi JohnB, I checked out Alcott Close on Google Street View like you suggested and was most surprised. I just didn't know it was there.

Beryl Nairn said...

Gurnell Grove was not part of the Cuckoo Estate. The Cuckoo Estate belonged to the London County Council and Gurnell Grove belonged to Ealing Council now the London Borough of Ealing

Sue, did you nick that item from the Prairie Home Companion, or are you telling us that the Knicker Squad has finally nicked Jim? Del

I think they have finally caught up with our Jim boy he is a lad for those navy blues.Glad to see you and Charlotte will be at the Reunion I wish I could join you but still being a working girl my vacation time is very limited and Tom and I have so much planned this year it is hard to get away.Would love to meet you sometime maybe you can make it to the U.S A

Del said...

We're sorry that you're not going to make the reunion Sue. Guess we'll just have to make do with 'im in doors.' As for visiting the States, my previous arrangements have all been curtailed, for one reason or another, so don't hold your breath on that one. Del

jim davis said...

Oiy! you two, I wasn't the only young lad sitting on the wall shouting at the girls in their NBKs. COR! No Our editor Tommy some time back put his hands up to doing it also. So there Sue Higginbottom.

yvonneh said...

The problem was Jim you were always the loudest so we always associated you as the mucky little boy whos hobby was looking at our nbks. Your reputation will always precede you, you should have thought of that all them years ago, you cant change it now.

jim davis said...

Yvonne are you forgetting something. You have already owned up to tucking your dress into your nicker legs, and doing hand stands against the wall. Wasn't that activity designed to have an influence on the boys? Yes it was. I thought I would answer for you before you lied and said no.

georgek said...

They are at it again, keep it up we love it!!

yvonneh said...

No Jim ,it was to clear my head it must have worked cos i never had nits also to see if the world was better upside down, and I did it because I could, I dont know what you were thinking as you couldnt see my nbks as my frock was tucked into my knicker legs so there.nerr nerr na nerr nerr!

jim davis said...

Not in the middle it wasn't. I don't think I'd better say any more.

jim davis said...

Have any of you blokes noticed how women don't seem able to walk in a straight line. It doesn't matter what side I walk on whilst I am out with the wife. She always gradually comes across my path. Time after time you see a couple of women walking and talking on the pavement and decide to overtake them. But to and fro they wobble first to the left then right, oblivious to anyone else. Sad to say, It seems to show when they are talking they can't do anything else properly.

yvonneh said...

Whats the matter with leap frogging Jim. Are you sure its the women and not you permanently inebriated.

jim davis said...

How on earth can I get any sense out of you women. My Jan was helping her daughter to sort some things re' here fathers estate a week or so ago. And i heard her say to her son on the telephone. " I rang Norwich Union today and made out I was me.

georgek said...

Jim,our is not to reason why, just go along with them, your life will improve and you will live longer, you might be a living cabbage, but hey man, what the hell.

yvonneh said...

Dont mock the cabbage george, it is a delicious specimen of vegetable, very succulent and tasty. JIM---- definitely not.

Anonymous said...

Hi Jim your right about them walking across you when your out walking thats why i get the wife to walk in front of me. (in case she treads in somthing)Iknow when i was young we was always taught to walk on the outside. Now i know why in case you wanted to get rid of your partner so walking in front of you so you had to walk in the road and get run over. i bet this was throught up by a woman.

Ted baker said...

The last comment was me Ted baker. pressed the wrong button.Alcott close was next to the old rent office. on the right hand side. that came of Westcott crescent.

jim davis said...

Otherwise it's ok to keep making comments like you have been doing.

Phil have you got a Pc or a mac, the way your posts are entered it seems like it is a mac. If I am right enter them yourself otherwise the do not look or read as they should. At the bottom of each page you will see where it says make a comment. Click on that, then you will be taken to a page there you will see a box where you can leave your comment. After you have done that go to the text below the box. The only thing you need to do is click on the round button where it says Name/URL that button then gets highlighted and there is a box where it says Name, enter your name there then click on the box that says publish your comment, then your comment gets entered automatically. Do not press any of the other buttons or enter anything else. just the ones that I indicated

Lovely to have you on site. but for goodness sake, first Jimmy wanted to be a monk, now you are calling him a teacher. his head wont take much more, \I reckon his doors must be shaped like light bulbs to allow him to move from room to room without banging his head, I think he would be better off in the monastry, what say you Jim.ththththbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrr!

Phil said...

Yvonne,i can't say to much about jim he used to hang around with for want of a better word)my cous ken bunting.Being a couple of years younger than thoes boys i was told by ken that when you first go to the seniors, the biggies got hold of you, hooked you on the railings up near the girls end, loosened your trousers and tickled you till they fell down.I was protected by ken jim and alec stedman.and it didn't happen to me.Is that right jim

jim davis said...

If you say so Phil. The trouble is I was so busy watching some some of the shameless hussy's doing hand stands up against the wall in their NBKs. I can't remember much else. No Yvonne a convent would suit me better. As a matter of fact one day whilst I was on the bread, I delivered to a convent. As I walked up the path I went past a building where the windows were open. It was pretty obvious the room was part of the laundry. Nuns were busy doing various work, sorting, washing and ironing various stuff. I stopped poked my head in the window and said "Good Morning" They all looked up and then I don't know why I but I said, "I bet you lot have got a lot a lot of dirty habits in here" They were not amused or at least they did not show it. That is all but the one that was closest to me, and she did have a twinkle in her eyes. So I thought Mmmmm! Yes! But of course it was no. So you see Yvonne it would be the Convent for me. She might still be there waiting for me.

Alec Stedman!!! I havent heard that name for almost 60years.Yvonne,I must know you.I was born in 1940 & lived at 58 Couckoo Ave.

phil said...

Hi Angela Alec Steadman used to go around with Ken Bunting from Mayfield Gdns and i beleive Jim when he left school he had a job as a dental technician making the old falses, that was the last time i heard of him.And yes you were right Jim the girls did like doing handstands up the wall.we used to have bets who could keep it up the longest(dose that sound right)there were some nice legs around in those days

jim davis said...

It sounds Ok to me Phil, and I bet Yvonne smiles at the double meaning. Cos' she's like that!

yvonneh said...

Cor blimey! that is a name from the past, Alec Steadman. If anyone knows where he is I need him as I have just cracked my dentures. Jim double meanings just float over my head, and Phill that wasnt fair, how much did you win on me,I think I deserve a cut for all that blood rushing to my head.
Angela I am sure I must know you. At St Annes I was in Miss Gill,s class. I lived in Upfield road and backed on to the Fields house in Cuckoo Ave. with Tags, next door to them. I put a phoyo on the site when it first started up of the class at St Annes I have looked back but cant find it. I will try again when I can get it photo copied to Tom. Nice to see lots more joining in on site.
