Hi,

Out of interest - what do you all think of leaving comments, photos, etc. on this site? Is there anyone who thinks it's not a secure thing to do? You might browse to read other's comments but not put anything on here yourselves, even anonymously, as you don't want to disclose anything about yourselves.

Just wondering, as I've had conversations about this over the holiday and know a couple of people who think this way about open groups.

Del said...

Nobody seems to worry about what is put on FB, so I don't see why it's a problem, Joan.

Joan said...

Well, the people I spoke to do, Del. Being a member is one thing, but adding something on here or Fb is another, or so it seems.

Del said...

Joan, I think that the difference between our site and Fb is that we are fairly obscure whereas the other lot is global. We've had a few oddballs but generally we're are a quite tight-knit group. I certainly wouldn't put any of my details on Fb.

Joan said...

Someone said that putting photos of loved ones that have passed away could be encouraging fraud, as names, etc., can be taken from these sites. However, I think that you'd only have to walk into a cemetery to do that. Also there are online memorial sites that anyone can log into.

I think if you're using an open group such as this one or the alternative Facebook you have to realize that anyone can log in and read your comments. If it's your personal 'friends only' Fb that's different again.

hi there i miss the old gang, that was always on this site.im not on facebook. It would be sad to see this site close.Ijoined in 2009.
Whats facebook got, that this as not.

Ted, I think that Face Book is more to do with the herd instinct, everyone wants to be universally loved. I'd rather keep in touch with my friends by email than announce to the world that I've got a spot on my nose, of the hamsters got a cold. Maybe they should rename that site 'Trivia Tome.'

i belong to both face book and cuckooite,s i only have family and friends on facebook i give no private info i play games with other people on face book who live abroad and my sisters also a friend on cuckooite,s and have found no problems these last 4 years ,but then i do not bank or do any transactoin on the internet.

A little humour to start the new year......

A Melbourne Zoo had acquired a female of a very rare species of gorilla.
Within a few weeks, the gorilla became very cantankerous and difficult to handle. Upon examination, the Zoo veterinarian determined the problem.
The Gorilla was on heat.

To make matters worse, there were no male gorillas of the species available.

While reflecting on their problem, the Zoo management noticed Graham, a big Kiwi lad & former, All Black, responsible for fixing the Zoo's machinery.
Graham, like most Kiwis, seemed to be possessed with ample ability to satisfy a female of any species. So the Zoo administrators thought they might have a solution.

Graham was approached with a proposition. Would he be willing to have sex with the gorilla for $500?
Graham showed some interest, but said he would have to think the matter over carefully.

The following day, Graham announced that he would accept their offer, but only under three conditions:
"Fust," he said, "I don't want to have to kiss er."
"Sicondly, you must niver niver tull anyone about thus."
The Zoo administration quickly agreed to these conditions, so they asked what his third condition was.
"Wull," said Graham, "You gotta give me another week to come up with the $500."

Happy new year to all Cuckooites and my Kiwi friends

Dell, when i joined there was so many folks on this site, they cant all have past away.I know there is some talk about a reuion this years. Where would it be,in a small room as the hall they had last time would be to big.I got my brother david who is four years older than me, he is 75. Had a look at the site.He said to me by phone, Where are all the people,i told him about last year. What could i say, i told him the truth there all on facebook. By the way where is Tommy/and jim davies.

Del said...

Reunion, Ted? How much would it cost to rent a phone-box for half an hour?

Joan said...

Ted, you asked what has Fb. got? Well, it's got the sign 'welcome newcomers' on it and not 'where have the old gang gone.'

ted baker said...

joan, maybe its says welcome on fb,We on the this site all aways welcome the old and the young. who lived on the cuckoo estate. The last time i lived on the estate was in 2002. over the last ten years ive gone back there. To see my sister, who still lives there. and some of my friends. If you have known me joan. ive always remeber that estate with real pride.Im a Christian, me and my wife run a youth club on there for 9 years, over 900 children came to that club over them wonderful years. Also in 1985 Me and my sister and my mother and others from Westcott crescent. neighbour watch later to be called cetra. We fought hard to stop the coucil building on the playing fields, called little john fields. If it was not for thoes faithful few. There would not be any playing fields there today, but houses. So you see joan i do care about friends ive made on this site, and always will. Del i think what you said was realy funny i always chuckle at your jokes. By the way Del do you live in this country. your some where far away like Wales or scotland. both these countrys, fined it hard to understand london language.

Joan said...

Nice to hear your thoughts Ted.

I think we all care about our past friends and this site has helped put me in touch with a few this year, so I'm certainly not dismissing it.

Unfortunately we cannot make other's look or comment on here on a regular basis, so perhaps we could accept things as they are for the time being.

Hello Joan,
I'm one of the "old gang" that hardly ever contributes to this site now. Not for any other reason than I don't have much to say these days that is new!The reminiscing and old school photos etc have been great over the years but there comes a time when everything has been said. Well, maybe! I regularly check in and have enjoyed reading what you and Jenny have contributed and am content to sit back a little now. I think you are exactly right with your comment re FB welcoming newcomers and not lamenting the demise of the old.If Cuckooites is to continue then it needs the younger and fresh blood to go on giving it life.
As for worrying about disclosure of private things that is up to the individual to decide. I can't see the point of worrying over things like that in this day and age as the fraudsters can find out what they want to from almost anything unless you want to live your life in seclusion.
So I urge you to carry on as you have been. Sooner or later some of us will drift back. Perhaps I will find some more old photographs although I must have saturated Tommy's inbox with them back in 2007.Meanwhile a note to Tommy, - stop worrying about the site and another reunion. Let things take their course for a while. You know only too well that if I wasn't tied up with Blind Bowlers I would have offered to organise the next reunion. Things have gone just the same way as the HOGS. That has faded away now although most of us are still in touch with each other. It is what happens and I accept it now although at first I didn't want to let go!
So keep going those of you that want to and Cuckooites will survive.

WELL SAID "VAL" I LOVE TO READ ALL THE CUCKOOITES COMMENTS. BUT DONT HAVE MUCH TO ADD TO THE SITE.ITS ALL BEEN SAID BEFORE..BUT I ALWAYS ENJOY CHECKING IN EVERY DAY. I WOULD HATE TO SEE THE SITE CLOSE AFTER ALL THIS TIME.AND ALL THE WORK "TOMMY" HAS DONE FOR US.SO LETS TRY TO KEEP THIS SITE GOING.

Great words from you Val, there's nothing like a 'head of steam' to get us all talking once again.

Yes, I've seen your input on here from 2007 and if nothing new's happening that's probably the thing to do - look at the older stuff on here.

I'm sure there'll be lots more comments now that you & Eileen have been on once again!

Del said...

Good to see that you're still around,Val. I know what you mean about easy access to personal details. Last night, at 7.30, I answered the 'phone and a woman mentioned my name and asked if I could spare five minutes to answer a questionnaire? I replied that, like her, I was working but, unlike her, I wasn't disturbing anyone. She rang off. So, there you go. She knew my name and number but we are ex-directory, or thought so.

Yes, Ted, I do live abroad, Suffolk. I don't know about Wales and Scotland but the locals around here don't understand me either.

Tommy said...

Hi Val great to hear from you and yes I share all your comments. If anyone was to step forward O know you would if you had the time. Please stay in touch with us and yes it is in the hands of that generation that followed us.Say hi to every one for us and i hope they are all keeping well.

Jenny said...

I think that while we stay talking to one another this site will have to stay open.
There are too many places for people to find out information about anyone. If A STRANGER wants to read my ramblings then they must have very little to do, only people that know me would know what I'm talking about.
There is a lot of history stored in our memories, if we shared them others might see that life can be fun without mobile phones and nintendo.
I've been doing family tree research lately and I think I'm slowly clearing away the leaves and finding some very interesting details about my relatives. I have recently discovered that 2 family members received the 1914-15 star which I never knew.

Nearly all of this post is completely off the topic being discussed but I hope you enjoy reading it.

Jenny said...

Del,

You need to get your hamster some medication for its cold.

Don't forget to give it tissues for bedding and blowing its nose.

ha! ha!

Del said...

Jenny, Horatio, my hamster, has recovered from the lurgy but, due to an overindulgence of dandelion leaves, the little rascal attempted to run around his treadmill, backwards.Unfortunately this stunt has resulted in a broken leg which, I'm afraid to say, will exclude him from the Hadleigh Pet Clubs annual sports day. We'd had high hopes of a commendable placing in the bungee jump competition as he had appeared to thrive on the diet of imported strawberries and marshmallow soup.

As things stand, I am now fashioning a wheelchair, using some of the tortoises spare wheels and an old cigar box. Time is of the essence as I had promised to help the lovely Charlotte crochet a barbed wire fence to protect the daffodil from the attentions of the marmalade cat that lives across the road.

A white mans work is never done.

Eff said...

Well I must be one of those folk that comment only now and then these days. Not too much to say really, but I do check the site out about once a week, and would hate it if it went away for good.
We are on our yearly vacation. In Yuma Arizona at the moment. Was in Vegas last week and will be in San Diego next. Weather lovely and sunny here close to 80 degrees.
I see the chat room has moved to Bits and pieces which was a bit of a surprise. Anybody heard from Yvonne lately? Hello Eileen, great to see you contribute, tell Albert Hi from me and George.

Jenny said...

Where was the bike factory? I've never heard of one and it sounds really interesting. Tell me more Ted.
I'm what you might call a Cuckooite baby as I wasn't born till 1949.

Del said...

I don't recall a bike factory in our area. I suppose the nearest thing was the Claude Butler shop in Bond Street, Ealing Broadway. I used to spend a lot of time admiring the bikes in the window and dreaming of owning one. Never did.

Joan said...

I think Ted's gone to get a bike. He'll have to peddle fast to get back to answer Jenny's question though before someone else does!

We're all hanging on to your last words Ted!

ted said...

hi Del what ever happend to Jim,. he was always on my case.About the bike factory, i will have to ask my brother, next time i phone him

Val B said...

Ted, I can answer the Jim question for you. He has decided to take a rest for a while for private reasons. No doubt he will emerge again one day.

The phone rings and the lady of the house answers, 'Hello..'

'Mrs. Sanders, please.'

'Speaking.'

'Mrs.. Sanders, this is Doctor Jones at Saint Agnes Laboratory. When your husband's doctor sent his biopsy to the lab last week, a biopsy from another Mr. Sanders arrived as well. We are now uncertain which one belongs to your husband. Frankly, either way the results are not too good.'

'What do you mean?' Mrs. Sanders asks nervously.

'Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other one tested positive for HIV... We can't tell which is which.'

'That's dreadful! Can you do the test again?', questioned Mrs. Sanders.

'Normally we can, but Medicare will only pay for these expensive tests one time.'

'Well, what am I supposed to do now?'

'The folks at Medicare recommend that you drop your husband off somewhere
in the middle of town . .

If he finds his way home . . Don't sleep with him.'

Good day Ted.

I have been scratching my head, along with the others, as to where the bike facory was mate. I would also be interested to know.

I wonder if Tommy remembers working at the bike factory, he was probably moonlighting and combined it with his trade as a butcher, "pumping" out "saddles" of lamb and "peddling" sheeps "lights" and "frames" of pork. !!

Best wishes Ted

Joan said...

I like that Freddie.

ted said...

ive just found out from my brother, that the bike factory was called Dayton in park royal. He worked there in the late 1940s.

Tommy said...

Yes Freddy,I think I did work there sometime in my life, not sure when but it makes for a good story.e have been hit with our first winter storm ,snow up to fourteen inches and every thing at a stand still.Sue and I are heading to San Diego for a winter break on Friday to visit my son and his family for ten days I hope we can get to the airport.

Angela Ware Kelling said...

Hi Tom,
glad you are surviving the snow.It is heading this way & will be the first big dump of the season.San Diego sounds like paradise.

Freddie Reese said...

Brrrrrr! Tommy and Angela I DO NOT miss that weather one little bit.

I must admit that I have become very soft after 37 years of living in this mediterainian like climate that we have here in Perth Western Australia.

Without wanting to appear to be rubbing it in, we are looking at temperatures in the top 30 degrees celcius for probably the whole of next week....With the chance of a thunder storm!! Don't ask me how that works, it is unprecendented for us at this time of the year.

Have fun in the sun Tommy and Sue and get some warmth on the old bonesmy friend.

Best wishes

Joan said...

Do hope you're OK in all that snow Tommy & Sue. Have a good break at your son's.

Jack Fender(formerly Mike) said...

I keep checking in to the site fairly regularly, as well as the facebook page. Tommy has been a real gent keeping it all together and I really appreciate all the hard work he's done over the years. I think everyone should leave a comment from time to time if they have a spare moment.
I go to Google earth quite a bit and use the history slider, you can see old MOD photos from 1945, they are blurry but you can still see Gurnell Grove & the prefabs that used to be there including all the others at the bottom of Cuckoo Ave and up by the "Shops". I recall them all being torn down in the early 60's. I wish there were photos of the Old Brentside Secondary School available, I know a few years back someone provided all of those great pictures of the Estate shortly after it was built, funny seeing the streets empty of cars. My wife thinks I must have been a crazy kid, but many of us would sit at the bottom of Cuckoo to write down the numbers of passing cars, just for fun. Keep it up Tommy your'e doing great work. Thanks a bunch, Jack

Freddie, interesting programe on the World Service at 3am this morning about the mining activity south of Perth, FIFO! Lot of bread being earned down there. I was amused by the comment of a lady, local to the area, who said, "FIFO, means Fly In Fly Out, but us residents read as Fly In F,,,Off!

Freddie Reese said...

Hi Del. Yes Del the State is in the middle of a massive resources boom at the momement North, South and East of Perth minesites are bursting at the seams for more labour, if you have a pulse you are in.
Do you fancy your self as a Haul Pack driver Del, or maybe a back hoe or bogger driver or crane driver or just a TA (trades assistant) all these trades are very much sort after and any other mining experience for that matter.

Lady FIFO cleaners are pulling in abot A$2000 aweek, two to three weeks on and one week off. cleaning the miners accommodation units (known as "dongas") not bad cop heh mate.

The gold price is keeping the gold mining sector booming and China and India's demand for resouces has the iron ore industry busting at the seams and this coupled with the latest oil and gas projects worth multi billions of dollars, coal, aluminum, copper, silver, uranium and nickel demands has created a huge drain on trades persons with shotages through out all trades descriptions.

So if you have sons, daughters, grand sons or grand daughters in these trade categories then my advice is "GO WEST YOUNG MAN/LADY"

Del said...

It all sounds good, Freddie. One of the guys that was interviewed said that he made 120,000 dollars, 'not bad for a first year apprentice.' My only experience of mines was going down one when I was ten years old and evacuated to Wales. When the cage (lift) dropped, I thought the cable had broken, frightened the life out of me. At the coal face. one of the miners handed me his pickaxe, which I could hardly lift, and told me to swing it at the wall. A couple of chips flaked off and he gave me one, 'There, bach, keep that for good luck,' he said. I carried it around throughout my teens but lost track of it when I was in the army.

I did mention the cleaning job to my wife, just hope that the ringing in my ear will clear up eventually.

Freddie Reese said...

I know what you mean Del, I suggested the FIFO cleaning job to the duck, it didn't go over well either, she reakons that she has her hands full cleaning up after me!!

Crikey Del, I just noticed, What on earth were doing up at 3.0 am in the winter, watching TV?!! THAT TIME IS NOT EVEN ON MY CLOCK MATE.

Take care Del and keep wrapped up this winter.

Del said...

I hardly watch anything on TV these days, Freddie, I do most of my viewing on my laptop. No, I was cosily tucked up in my sack, listening to the radio and a Walkman. Still strictly a night person.

I forgot to tell you that we finally got the Kindle up and running. Turned out that the problem had been that is was registered in the lovely Charlotte's name which was why they wouldn't accept my details. Anyway, I trawled the the jazz books on offer and opted for a biography of Chet Baker. Would you believe it, I hit the hay last night, opened the thing to read chapter eight, and a pop-up informed me that the battery was low, so to turn it off. Well, there you go, don't get that problem with proper books. Stupid gizmo!
